Parent Involvement at Community Prep

"As soon as you walk through the door at Community Prep you feel welcome."

These are the words of one parent, expressing her views on parent involvement. This is why so many parents find it easy to get involved. Whether it is volunteering their time or simply talking with teachers, staff, other parents, or students, parents soon find that they are very much a part of the Community Prep Family. There are so many ways to get involved. Many parents have used their unique skills to help at the school, from teaching mini-courses, to organizing fundraisers, to helping provide after-school music lessons. Others have helped by running errands, driving children places, assisting with the after-school program and helping with miscellaneous odd jobs.

Parental involvement is fostered from the beginning of the child's experience. Since the school believes that active parent participation in a child's education is a very important ingredient in the success of that child, it has included parents in a very important process: the goal setting conferences. Every quarter the parent, student and teacher meet to help the student decide what goals to work on. Then, with the help of the parent and teacher, the student devises a plan for accomplishing these goals.

Many parents also become involved on the Board Committees, including the Education Committee, the Diversity Committee, Admissions and Alumni Relations Committee, the Long Range Planning Committee and the Special Events Committee to name a few. There is a very active Parent Organization, which fills two important needs: it acts as a forum for parents to meet and get to know each other and discuss issues facing us as parents, and to conduct fund-raisers and all-school events, including the Mayfair and the International Pot-Luck dinner.

Parents can become as involved as their schedules will allow. The rewards are a warm feeling of community spirit and a sense that they are helping the children themselves to become strong and responsible citizens.
